Dune Baby Names: Paul, Chani, Leto and the Imperium
The Dune films (2021, 2024) have done what no Dune adaptation managed before: pushed Frank Herbert's wildly distinctive names onto American birth certificates. Paul, Chani, Leto, Jessica — names that range from familiar to entirely invented are now showing up in baby data.
The Atreides Family
Paul · The unlikely lead of Dune. Paul is one of the steadiest classic English names — peaked in the 1950s, declined, but never disappeared. The films won't bring it roaring back, but they've made it cool again for a generation that knew it only as their dad's name.

Leto · Leto Atreides — Paul's father (the duke) and his future son. Leto is a name with deep roots (Greek mother of Apollo and Artemis) but is genuinely uncommon as a modern name. The films have started to push it onto US birth certificates, very early days.
Jessica · Lady Jessica is one of the most consequential characters in the saga. Jessica was huge in the 1980s and 1990s — peaked 1987 — and has been declining since. The films are unlikely to revive Jessica overall, but they're reminding parents that the name has serious literary weight.

Alia · Paul's sister — Alia of the Knife. Already a beautiful Arabic name ("high, exalted") used widely in Muslim communities. The Dune connection adds a different audience.

The Fremen Names
Chani · Paul's love interest, played by Zendaya in the films. Chani is a wildly unusual name — short, sharp, ends with a vowel. Some parents are picking it up as a uniquely-Dune choice. Pronounced CHAH-nee.
Stilgar · The Fremen leader. As a baby name? Probably not. But it's already showing up in deep-fan circles — typically as a middle name or a way for parents to nod to the saga without committing the kid to a lifetime of explanation.
Liet · Liet-Kynes, the planetary ecologist. Liet is unisex in Dune. Rare but sometimes appearing as a middle name in deep-fan families.
The Imperium and the Bene Gesserit
Irulan · The Princess Irulan — chronicler of Paul's rise. Irulan is invented (Frank Herbert's coining) but has the same vowel-rich melodic structure as Aurora and Arlana. Very small numbers in US data; growing.
Helena · Reverend Mother Helen Mohiam. Helena is a classic with deep history (Helena of Troy, Saint Helena). Already steady in US data; the Dune connection won't move it much but it's an option for fans who want a more accessible Dune name.
Duncan · Duncan Idaho, the swordmaster. Duncan is a Scottish classic — declining in US data over the past decade. The films give it a brief refresh.
Gurney · Gurney Halleck, the troubadour-warrior. Gurney as a first name is genuinely rare. Will probably stay there. But it works as a striking middle name.
What Counts as a "Dune Name"
Frank Herbert built Dune's naming around three traditions: ancient Greek (Leto, Helen, Atreides), Arabic and Islamic (Alia, Muad'Dib, Jihad, Lisan al-Gaib), and his own coinings (Chani, Irulan, Stilgar). The most successful Dune names crossing into US baby data are the ones that already had real-world precedent — Alia and Helena were beautiful Arabic and Greek names long before Herbert.
The pure-coinings — Chani, Irulan, Stilgar — face a higher pronunciation tax and are mostly chosen by deep-fan parents. They're growing slowly but won't likely cross into mainstream territory.
The cleanest Dune naming move is to pick a real-world name that the saga uses (Paul, Leto, Helena, Alia) and let the connection be private. Your kid grows up with a name that works at school and means something to you.
